  • MOVE YOUR HANDS РУХАЙ РУКАМИ

Stress and trauma disrupt the connection between our mind and body.

Each hand has 17,000 mechanoreceptors, receptors that sense touch, temperature, pressure, vibration, texture, pain, skin stretch and the position of our body in space (proprioception).

With this wealth of sensory input, our hands are superb resources for repairing the disrupted mind-body connection. As we move our hands, our stressed brain begins attending to the various sensations and distracts from the anxiety.

Moving your hands can reduce muscle tension, distract you from distressed feelings, improve body awareness and promote integration of mind and body, improving self-control and coping self-efficacy.

  • I am feeling Я відчуваю

Stress and trauma generate a myriad of feelings which range in type, intensity and duration. How we manage those feelings impacts our functioning.

When we manage our fear or sadness well, we have self-control, we are coping well. This management skill is known as emotion regulation, the ability to “regulate/manage” our feelings.

Naming, understanding and differentiating our feelings are keys to emotion regulation. Naming helps identify the type of feeling, building language around our emotions, validating our experience. Understanding and differentiating builds self-efficacy, fostering our ability to “down-regulate”: lower the intensity and duration of distressing feelings.

  • 5-4-3-2-1 GROUND YOUR SENSES "ЗАЗЕМЛИ" СВОЇ ВІДЧУТТЯ

Stress and trauma disrupt the connection between our mind, body and environment, causing an array of functional issues.

Grounding builds mental and physical “mini-connections” to the world around us, restoring the deeper connection to self, others and reality.

The strategies are simple and effective. By focusing on just one thing (e.g., things we see), mental overwhelm and chaos are reduced and we can think more clearly.

By engaging our senses with the physical world, we can get space from distressing emotional states, lower our emotional intensity and calm down. By connecting to our present environment, we can better separate the past from the present, which helps in managing flashbacks (reliving a past event).
