Fold a Mini Bag or Cup COPECARD®

How It Works

Folding paper requires a complex integration of skills:

  • sequential memory: remembering and recalling a sequence in the correct order

  • spatial perception: our awareness of the space around us, how close or far an object is from us

  • fine and gross motor skills

  • hand/eye coordination

  • bilateral integration of the hands: the ability to control both hands, working together, to complete a task

  • graded movement of the hands: using appropriate amount of force to complete the task, in this case: to fold paper

The process of folding:

  • employs visual, tactile and repetitive muscular activity

  • requires concentration: directing movement with precise thought - this cognitive focus relaxes the body (physiological slowdown) and calms the mind

  • uses sequential memory which promotes memory retrieval and integration, which are disrupted by stress/trauma

  • promotes problem solving, engaging our thinking brain

  • connects us to our physical reality and environment, grounding us in the present

How to Use

Use a square piece of paper (4” x 4” or larger) OR start with a rectangular piece of paper (4” x 6” or larger) and make it square (as directed). Begin folding your bag or cup. Create your own designs. Research origami: the art of paper folding. Research the properties of paper and its aerodynamics (paper airplanes). Research the science of folding/unfolding: the primary mirror and sunshield of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, designed to unfold once in space.

When to Use - Signs of Stress/Trauma

  • not talking, not answering questions

  • disconnected: staring blankly into space; immobilized - not moving

  • preoccupied, worried, overwhelmed

  • anxious, panicked, agitated

What It Can Do

  • folding is a slow, measured movement with tangible results - it can lower anxiety, promote calm

  • builds self-efficacy: one’s belief in their ability to accomplish a task

  • think more clearly; increased concentration & problem solving

  • improve compliance: folding promotes following directions

  • increase control over feelings (self-regulation)

  • increase interaction with people and environment
